# Certified Med Spas: open the AOD-9604 file

> Certified Med Spas: AOD-9604 under inspection — Certified med spas, examined through AOD-9604: fat-metabolism experiments, human tolerability, chemical identity and rabbit cartilage research.

**AOD-9604**

A reassuring word deserves a specific subject. The test behind the seal comes first.

## AOD-9604 and the fat-loss claim

The word certified sounds final. To my ear, it leaves the interesting question hanging: what, exactly, has been established? AOD-9604 gives that question some substance. [Preclinical metabolic studies examined a synthetic domain of human growth hormone](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11146367/). The idea of isolating an activity within a larger hormone is appealing. So is the prospect of a compact answer to a complicated problem.

Then the verbs start to matter. An early [experiment in rat fat tissue found inhibition of fat formation, with no significant fat-breakdown effect in its assay](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8358331/). A later [study in obese mice reported increased fat oxidation and weight loss](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11673763/). Those are different observations. I give the precise verb more weight than the reassuring adjective.

This is where the inspection begins: with the [fat-metabolism experiments](/fat-metabolism), including an unusually revealing mouse experiment in which a receptor was missing.

## The human tolerability record

The [published human safety summary](https://www.jofem.org/index.php/jofem/article/view/157/194) describes oral AOD-9604 in about 900 adults with obesity across roughly six clinical trials. Safety and tolerability were reported as indistinguishable from placebo. That deserves a fair hearing.

I can welcome that finding and still ask a separate question. Tolerating a substance and obtaining a desired change in weight answer separate questions. The scale of the [human tolerability programme](/human-tolerability) surprised me after the early tissue work. A [later sports-medicine review includes AOD-9604 among unapproved compounds and raises concerns about the limited rigorous human safety evidence for such peptides](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41966639/).

## A laboratory case and a rabbit knee

Two less obvious records make the file more interesting. A [chemical-identification case report concerned preparations seized by Belgian authorities](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24976118/). A [rabbit osteoarthritis experiment measured cartilage degeneration after administration into the knee joint](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26275694/).

I’m drawn to these awkward changes of subject. Identification has a tangible accomplishment: establishing what a preparation contains. Cartilage research has a particular tissue and an animal model. Each can succeed on its own terms without settling the weight-loss question.

Follow the [identity investigation](/identity-testing) or examine the [rabbit cartilage experiment](/rabbit-cartilage). The [reading list](/references) gathers the publications, and [About](/about) explains the name on the door.

I inspect published research at Certified Med Spas; this is an editorial site, not a med-spa business, and nothing here is medical advice.
