# Identifying AOD-9604

> Identifying AOD-9604 at Certified Med Spas — Certified med spas follows an AOD-9604 identification case and a laboratory screening paper: what an analytical result establishes about a substance.

A case involving seized preparations brings the word identity into unusually sharp focus.

## The seized preparations

Here is a paper with a very different object of inquiry. [Belgian authorities’ seized pharmaceutical preparations were the subject of a 2014 identification and characterization report on AOD9604](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24976118/). The report documented the presence of this growth-hormone fragment in unknown preparations outside approved channels.

For this case, the analytical question absorbs me; the seizure is background. Before anyone can argue about what a substance does, there is a quite literal question about what the substance is. In this case, identifying and characterizing AOD9604 was the accomplishment.

The case gives a concrete meaning to a word that can become decorative. Identity has something to be established, a particular preparation in front of the analyst. It would be easy to make the report stand for every preparation bearing the same name. I would give it the more disciplined credit of documenting the preparations it actually concerned.

## The urine-screening paper

A later [analytical study developed screening for low-molecular-mass peptides using direct urine injection, liquid chromatography and ion mobility mass spectrometry](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26578461/). AOD-9604 was among the peptides included in that sports-testing method.

A screening method is an answer to a detection problem. I value that achievement without treating the instrument as a judge of therapeutic benefit. The paper’s subject is analytical performance. The human tolerability file concerns people taking oral AOD9604; the cartilage file concerns an experimentally affected rabbit joint. Moving between those files means changing the question.

## Identity and therapeutic claims

I’m persuaded by certified only when it names a precise statement somebody could check. Chemical identity is a good example of such a statement. It still has a subject: the preparation that was analyzed, or the method that was evaluated.

The vanishing subject bothers me: a precise result becomes a general halo. Knowing a substance’s identity cannot, by logic alone, establish that it delivers a desired health outcome. That judgment needs its own evidence. Return to the [fat-metabolism experiments](/fat-metabolism) for biological activity or the [oral human programme](/human-tolerability) for the reported tolerability result.
